Ah ok :) Good to know that it's not because bin immigration is somehow seriously flawed. Like you, I store some households in the bin that are not meant to be used by SP. Will have to remember to exempt them. Thanks again for all your help!

Haha. For an alternate perspective, I love bin immigration. I seek out good sims up for download and add them to my bin for genetic diversity. I particularly like celebrity simalikes. A good likeness to a real person adds striking genetics.

Mostly my bin immigration is used to create service sims. However, I tend to adopt newspaperkids and babysitters into my town if they develop any relationship with my active sims.

BTW: I tend to archive sims from my active households by exporting them to Sims3Pack. So it's just a different style.

The thing that really freaked me out was returning to China in World Adventures and discovering that my active sim had an adult-aged daughter there. Yike!

@Echoweaver

Thanks for chiming in! How many bin sims would you recommend to achieve a good level of diversity?

I use Ecohweaver's (Waving at you) method. I use a lot of sliders for many of my sims and have some taller than others and some not so physically attractive, i.e. waist higher/lower, different head sizes or a different posture etc. It's fun to see how the game imports them in. I've haven't thrown one out yet!
My method of archiving is: I have my sims converted to .package files and archive Sims via the Library .package files. As far as how many sims, I keep around 15 households some small households and some large or single.

Well, there's the sim bin and the household library. When you go into Create a Household to create a new sim and have the option of loading in a previously saved sim, that's the sim bin. Sim bin sims are individual sims stored as .sim files in the Sims directory on the harddrive.

The household library is where you go in Edit Town to add whole families to a house in your town.

I know that bin immigration pulls from the sim bin, but I've never been clear if it also pulls from the household library.

At any rate, it's hard to say exactly how many sims make for good genetic diversity in immigration. It's a lot fewer than you'd expect for a "real" town, especially since every immigrated sim is the genetic child of two sims (from the sim bin or elsewhere), so you get a lot of different feature combinations.

I think 15 would be a good number. I think I have more than that, but not a whole lot more, maybe 20-25.

One thing that's nice about downloading sims is that you don't need to have any of the sliders used to create it so long as you don't actually edit it. Most custom sliders (I think?) just allow editing of existing values in the sim file in ways the base game doesn't permit. So your game will happily load in a sim built with custom sliders and use its features for genetic inheritance, but if you try to edit them in CAS they'll snap back to values in the vanilla range.

Derp, that was the SavedSims directory, ala Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/SavedSims for the sim bin.

Currently mine features Tom Cruise, my daughter's simself, Severus Snape, Rihanna, Michael Jackson (young), Edward Cullen, Britney Spears, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, several non-celebrity likenesses of various ethnicities that I think really capture features well, and a few cool inactive sims I saved to the bin from my various games.

(waves hi at Echo) Sorry to have to point this out, but I'm pretty sure SP Immigration's genetics ignore the Sim Bin and only focus on the Household one. Otherwise I would see certain sims like my self one and others I have many copies of as I've changed their template over time represented in-game all over the place (and I don't want this even in a test game where I'm not really paying attention to this feature). It is possible that you have these sims represented in both places?

Check out NRaas > SP > General Options > Options:Lots (or Sims) > Options:Immigration/Emigration > Immigration Disallow Bin by House and you will see only Household Bin entries. There is no such counterpart for the Sim Bin. Possibly another mod, not NRaas, like maybe Awesome calls upon those?

Hi again Echoweaver - The sims I have in the Saved Sims folder are .sim files installed I /think/ via 3Pack/Launcher and those show up in CAS. Those I put those in the game and sometimes save save them to the Library Folder in the Game Folder. The 3pack sims I convert to .package file sims I put in the Library Folder and they automatically show up in the bin in Edit Town.
I love your sim bin Sims. Where did you find Michael Jackson? It is fun playing with the genetics. I have the GOT Characters and love it when some of Tyrion Lannister's genetics show up in game.
I do play a lot with sliders though. I can not say for sure I've seen sims snap back to the vanilla range when I edit them, but perhaps not as I usually download the sliders for the sims if they are not included in the file. I'm addicted to the sliders now.

@banque11 - Sorry, we kind of hijacked your thread. Hope this all is of some use to you :) Fire away if you need more help or clarification.
