Switching between worlds without "real" traveling

Post by himawara » March 19th, 2018, 2:56 pm

It's me with a traveler question again, sorry. :)

As I did my research about traveler functionality I somewhere found a tutorial on how to switch between worlds. Now I wanted to ask, if this is also possible with a savegame, where all the other world files are stored in.

So, when I have copied my .nhd files from other worlds save games into my main save and I travel to a world, my sims can live in this world after traveling there and changing home world. Now I read in the tutorial, that I can go back to the main world by selecting travel and then deselecting the sim who would travel there. Then the old world loads without the sim.

My question now: is this true? And can I play this "old" world with other families, like I normally would? Or do I have to change the home world again in traveler?

Thanks for your patience with all my traveler questions. :)

Yes, this is true. The procedure for transitioning gameplay from one world to another is to have your sim call up (or use a computer) to travel but double-click their name on the right side where the list of sims traveling is to shift them over to the left side. Then travel (with "no one on board"). When you arrive at the destination, the game will ask you which household you would like to play.

One kind of a gotcha, the active sim in the beginning needs to have enough cash to afford the trip even though they aren't really going. They are not really charged for it, though.

I had this fail on me once and got through it by grabbing some random sim in the first world I never paid any attention to and moving them permanently to the second, then after reloading the game as required, switching active households. But there were some odd things happening in the destination world that were getting in the way, that was unusual and shouldn't always be required.

Can't put much stock in a tutorial "found somewhere" without seeing it, but I think our own FAQ page covers all of this pretty well. Just without illustrations, unfortunately.

Thanks. I've read the FAQ already more than once but it never came to my attention, sorry. Or I didn't understand it correctly. Now I do and it opens up so many new possibilities. :D

So it's save to "jump" between my worlds this way? And playing with different households from different worlds? And can I switch to a world, play with a different household and travel with this household to a completely different world (in my save game).

Safe? I've been playing that way for years. Traveler is one of the mods that brought this game to life for me ages ago. I've got 16 connected worlds in my ongoing save and "my" sims live in 5 of them. I switch active play between these worlds whenever I want to.

Now the game itself is delicate, I think we all know that, and travel transitions even more so. It's always a good idea to Save (As) frequently so we can revert things back to a safe point, even if it's with active play in a different world, in case things do go wrong.

I feel like I am in an alternate reality. Igazor do you have any footage of this or would you mind using like fraps or something to make some so we can check out your worlds and how your sims live in them?

@yuk75 - I'll consider it, but am not really sure this is necessary. If you want to get a feel for how Traveler works across connected worlds, do up a test game or make a save of an existing one for such testing, move some sims to a new world following the FAQ procedure, then maybe some more to another new world, and you have a network of three already. Then vacation some of them back and forth, have some of the ones left behind come over for a visit, and try the transition (travel with no sims on board) trick to see how it all works.

Or is there some other aspect of what I've described, besides the Traveler allowed connections, visits back and forth, and transitions, that sounds so interesting?

Keep in mind though, that although the worlds are connected, they are also self-contained in that the inactive, not being played in at the moment worlds are all in states of suspended animation. So really only one world moves forward at a time. Plus the travel transitions with or without sims "on board" are jarring to the game, take a long time to get through (relatively speaking) and for me always require a Save As and reload pretty soon after arrival. It's not like I transition active worlds multiple times in the same sim day. Guess I could, but wouldn't actually be able to get much meaningful play in that way and the day of the week, time of day, and current seasons being different between them all might be enough to drive anyone who is not a professional pilot or flight attendant crazy. :)

@igazor
Or do you have a tumblr or blog where we can see your gameplay? It really sounds interesting!

Gosh, I'm loving all the attention all of a sudden. But no, my sims are shy and value their privacy. :)

Actually, no I don't usually have time to produce such things even for my own enjoyment. I only get to really play once or twice a week as it is now. But you can see what my version of Riverview looked like as of a year ago or so, if that's of any interest. This was done for someone else here, and concentrates on the Industrial area of town as that is what we were discussing at the time. Nothing really directly related to Traveler, though.

Sounds super cool though, like travelling dimensions!
