Question re Return Trips to University

Post by LoganDownUnder » February 3rd, 2018, 3:35 pm

Hey guys,
In all this time, I've only ever made one visit to Uni to get a degree (using apt test & 2 wk term). While working on a mod, I wanted to test return trips as well, and I'm not sure if maybe I'm doing something incorrectly. I know Uni can have issues, but so can I on occasion.

I enrolled a Sim for a 1 wk term. After arriving at Uni on the first visit, there were approx 110 students total (including me). When the week ended, the Sim returned home (without graduating). Everything appeared to be ok with credits, etc. After re-enrolling to complete the degree, the Sim returned to Uni. Upon arrival, I checked the sims' status using MC, and this time it only showed my Sim as a student. Everyone else was listed as unemployed (apart from the few bookstore, grocery and Showtime workers). So that meant a very lonely Sim in class (no students or professors).

I reloaded at the point just before re-enrolling and tried using the spouse instead. I also tried switching households and using yet another sim. Same thing each time, only 1 student and a town full of unemployed sims. The only thing that seemed to have any effect on this was the removal of the Traveler mod. Doing this resulted in approx 40 students on the return visit, quite a bit less than the first visit but at least something.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Does it sound like it could be a settings issue for one of the mods? Not getting any script errors, so I'm currently at a loss as to what might be going on.

Currently Installed Mods: ErrorTrap1.67, MasterController134c, Overwatch123a, StoryProgression269, DebugEnabler54, Careers88, Register81, Traveler87, Tagger4a

Hi there, Logan!

The short answer is yes, constantly. Just about every time my sims return to an already "used" instance of Uni World. But wait, you are checking for fellow students to be assigned right after arrival or are you letting some time pass? The re-enrollment of inactives won't happen right away, some see a delay until as late as Sunday afternoon or maybe even later if it's going to happen at all.

And others, like me, either get no returning students (running SP's progression in Uni World is supposed to fix this) or just not enough of them. MC/MC Cheats can be used to force those lazy inactive students back into their academic careers although it gets a little tedious because one then has to decide what their majors should be and designate one student in each of the majors to be a professor (Level 2 Uni Student).

On the 40 students vs. 110 though, I think 40 is more along the lines of what the game itself tries to provide. Not sure that the 110 will ever happen without some player and mod intervention.

Hey there, igazor! I was actually hoping it was something I did...drat!

This all started out as a simple improvement to the Student Union (for those who use the shell) to alleviate some of the crowding issues. Amanda was able to remove the deco doors on the two Uni shells and turn them into slots where "real" shell doors are added, thus giving a back entrance to the Student Union...it even updates automatically once installed, no user intervention required.

Then, I got side-tracked by that one missing Science professor, got that sorted, and now this happens. It just never ends, lol.

My last run through had SP on in homeworld and off at Uni (EA runs instead). The days went by with a lonely Sim in classes. I can't remember if I tried it using SP at Uni, which I know you use via my research attempts on this, but I will enable it and see if anything changes.

I also had success by going through all the households once Uni loads and having a script reassign the unemployed resident sims back to student status if the student count was say < 75, though most were reassigned to the course they had just graduated from, so it would need to be refined to take already earned degrees into account. The first time I ended up with a student total in the 60's, another time in the 90's (not sure why the difference), but I didn't want to keep trying to fix something when I wasn't sure how or if it was even broken.

Traveler was the only connection I could find, so I figured you guys would certainly be more knowledgeable of any known quirks that using it might possibly cause.

Let's see if Chain or the others have anything to add. Of course many of us are going to balk at the notion of not running Traveler as a rule just so our sims can have automagically provided Uni students. But I don't recall anything definitive ever being proclaimed that Traveler is the cause of such borkage.

Myself included (balk, that is) :)

Turning SP on in Uni did assign most of the unemployed to students after some time passed -- 106 student sims (30 continued prior course, the rest branched out onto new frontiers).

Don't immediately know of anything in traveler that would cause this but I'll make a note to look into it.

I don't usually see this issue. The only time my sims have been the only ones enrolled was when I had disabled NRaas SP in university and forgot that I had disabled EA's as well. Once I enabled one of them (I think it was NRaas SP) practically the whole town was enrolled by the end of the day.

I don't often check to see whether inactives are re-enrolled to majors they've already gotten a degree in. But I know it happens; that was the case with the last 3 or 4 university sims I've added to the household. In my current game, though, the university world is fairly long progressed, I've had quite a few sims get degrees and I've disabled aging for that world with Traveler.

The only recurring issue I have with return trips to university is the absence of professors. I have to manually assign them every trip after the first. I've never noticed the need to manually enroll students.

It's entirely possible (very likely in fact) that I'm just not waiting long enough myself on that first Sunday before assigning inactives to the Uni Student career and giving them majors. The one time my sim had no fellow students I probably didn't have SP of either type switched on either and tend to react too quickly so as to avoid going through that again. This was so long ago that I would have long since dumped those saves as being dead ends and replayed them another way so I can't really go back and check on them now.

I initially had both SPs turned off. After turning EAs back on, no students were added, but when I used NRaas SP instead as igazor suggested, the students were added sometime Sunday (after orientation), but I forgot to note the time. I also forgot to disable my own code that refreshes the Professors, so I had them a couple of minutes after Uni loaded. I'm not sure if SP will add professors...I'll have to check that out as well.

I now play with NRaas SP enabled in the university world; it does not promote or assign university professors.
