Too Many Homeless Sims

Post by Calista_Drake » March 13th, 2017, 1:02 am

While waiting for my son to come and repair my computer, I am playing on my laptop. It's not a gaming laptop, but it can handle the game OK so long as there isn't to much content. I only have the base game, Generations, and Ambitions installed, with some of my store content, but no SP's or store worlds except Hidden Springs. I'm using DE, Dreamer, ET, Go Here, MC with cheats, integration, and progression, Mover, No CD, Once Read, OW Porter, Portrait Panel, Register, Relativity, Retuner, Sleep Freedom, SP with career, extra, money, population, and relationship, Tagger, Woohooer with scoring, and Written Word, as well as a few mods from other sources. I'm playing in Twinbrook, with a stylist married to a sim in the business career.

I have my SP settings pretty much the same as I use normally, on my computer. But my town is totally overrun with homeless sims. I ran the population demographics with MC, and found that there are 378 households with 354 homeless sims and 71 residents. Most of these homeless sims are employed in the rabbithole careers, and there are are so many sims in every career, it's very difficult to find the rabbithole map tags when they're all at work. My sim in the business career has at least 10 coworkers, maybe more, with another 10 or more in the journalism career in the same building. The lag is so bad, my game is barely playable.

I saved my game and T/A'd the entire homelss non-service population, which definitely improved the situation, except that my stylist now has no coworkers at the salon. I know the game will take care of that, but I'm afraid it's also going to flood the town with homeless sims again.

I have never had this happen before. With only 2 EP's many of the settings I normally use aren't relevant, and this is only a quickie, temporary game, until my computer is working again, so I didn't go through all the settings as carefully and thoroughly as I do in my “real” games. Can someone please suggest what I might do to prevent this from happening again?

I sometimes have homeless sims created continuously. I can usually tell by the lag in the game. In my games it's SP/General Options>Options:sims>Options: Immigration\Emigration>Replace ... with Immigrants that is the culprit. Turning that either of those to false (service sims and NPC roommates) stops the continuous generation of homeless sims. So, check that setting.

There's also an updated version of Register which should stop spawning homeless if you don't have LN or Ambitions installed. You could try that too.

I got a tuning file that eliminated non-resident coworkers. It was posted here in this thread: http://nraas.wikispaces.com/share/view/80475722

<a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.mediafire.com/file/t06dap6r0 ... orkers.rar" rel="nofollow">http://www.mediafire.com/file/t06dap6r0 ... ers.rar</a>

It will make your game throw errors that appear in the rabbit hole buildings but it will sort itself out in short order and then the errors stop.

@TreyNutz Those settings were among the first I checked. All SP immigration settings are on false, and I'm already using the current version of Register. I normally have it set to allow immigration and to not allow filling roles with residents. But I don't need mixologists, bouncers, or paparazzi, so maybe I should change that. As it turns out, when I went back to the save before annihilating the homeless sims, and checked the career summary demographics, my stylist has no coworkers anyway. She's the only stylist, and there are no tattoo artists. But there are 22 firefighters. My sim in the business career actually has 32 coworkers, and there are 28 in the journalism career. But culinary tops the list, at 50 employees.

@Calista - Just to clarify what Trey was saying, this is probably the known bug with Register v80 when LN (or Ambitions) is not present. The fix is in the beta testing version, not the "current" one. It's Register v81 we are suggesting you try if you haven't already.

OK, thanks Igazor. I've downloaded and installed that beta version. So, it was register doing it, then?

Register v80 in particular for those lacking or not loading Ambitions or LN. Can't say I've seen the bug in action myself as I never play without those EPs so am relying on the reports of other players here. I'm going to guess that ridiculous numbers of homeless get spawned and then get put to work in these other careers so they have something to do in the case you described, not that the careers are frantically calling for more co-workers. Not that it would be any more comforting to have 1,000 more sims in the service pool, becoming street performers (if you had Showtime on this rig), or something else.

Sorry, I did mean the beta testing version of Register. I should have clarified.

I can confirm that without Ambitions installed, I have an ungodly number of homeless spawned in my towns (to the order of several thousand in just a week or two). My current solution is to let Register (non-Beta version) immigrate homeless until I have about as many as I have residents, then turn off immigration. If they get out of hand, for any reason, I clear them out with MC and let them immigrate to my desired threshold again. This has DRASTICALLY improved game performance for me, and I still have plenty of homeless to fill whatever role I need.

The other option is to allow immigration fulltime and set MC to purge homeless each night (which is what I USED to do before I knew the cause), but that just creates extra unnecessary work and can end up with stuttery lag throughout the day as the homeless population grows.

@varusso - I think you mean Overwatch, not MC on the overnight cleanups. But the beta version of Register didn't fix the problem at its source or you hadn't tried it yet?
