In future please read the stickies before posting to a forum, they are there for a reason. I don't know if it was the cause of your problems, but you have a mod that is not compatible with NRaas mods, as explained here.

My kids regularly run into similar problems with various games they play, and it's usually caused by harddrives with little or no disk space left. Could that be the problem here?

My sense is yes, but again only such a small usage increase that it would be difficult to impossible to detect.
