Store content and disc/steam game install

Post by kimlupai » September 16th, 2018, 7:06 am

Sorry this is totally non NRaas related but I'm hoping someone here might have some experience.

I have two computers. One is a Win7 computer and has my game installed with all EPs etc. It's all installed from discs bought as the EPs etc were released. All these discs are registered to my EA/Origin account so it's got all the store content I've bought over the years installed as well.

The second computer has Win10 and recently as Sims 3 was on offer on Steam I bought the base game as a back up. (I know I've already got it backed up because it's registered on Origin but I'm paranoid). :) After watching a lets play on youtube where the youtuber basically 'completed' the base game - all careers, LTWs etc. I thought it would be fun to do the same thing and try out things I've skipped or missed previously. So I installed the Steam version of the game on this computer.

My question is can I register the Steam versions of my game on my original EA/Origin account and then download and use my store content in this game as well? Or I do I have to create a second EA/Origin account and buy the store stuff again for the Steam game?

I don't want to move the store content from one game to the other, rather use the store stuff in both versions. If I absolutely have to I'll buy the store content I want again, but if I don't have to, well that would be great.

I did contact EA/Origin support by telephone and although the person I spoke too was very helpful I don't think he quite understood that I was referring to store content and not the EPs/SPs.

Thanks for any advice. :)

P.S. If anyone is interested, the youtuber is Pete Complete.

You don't need to register it with Origin/EA just login to the Store from your browser and download your store Items. Your Store items are your's the installation type doesn't matter whether it's Steam, Origin or disc.
You can register it if you want but it's not necessary.

Almost forgot your Store Item downloads are tied to the registry key of the game installation so Store items downloaded via a Steam install will not work with an Origin or Disc install.
So say you were to uninstall the Steam version and install the disc version you would need to re-download those for the disc version (keeping a backup of the ones you downloaded for the Steam version for later use).

That's wonderful news. Thank you. Also good to know about the Steam and Disc installations needing separate downloads. I will make sure I keep separate back ups

Thanks again.

I am pretty sure you can install the game via Origin or if you have the discs on 5 computers. I had it downloaded on my computer and through Origin on my laptop, when I put it in my daughters computer via Origin it asked me if I was sure as I had only 4 downloads of it left. Same thing with sons but it was down to 3. We were able to put the store stuff on all of them. Saved me from having to buy them all the disks. When my laptop dies I was able to remove it from the used downloads and had 3 left again. Not sure if they changed something with 1.69 but I know it worked in the past.

Mandelyn, I'm pretty sure you're right and I could have installed it on my Win10 computer with Origin, complete with all the EPs etc. Thing is I'm paranoid and an idiot so I wanted to have a second back up. My other reason is that I believe installing with Origin would put me on patch 1.69. I've read that it has the habit of occasionally forgetting which EPs you want to play with and I know I'd forget to check before loading the game, I have a dreadful memory. Plus I think some programmes don't work with 1.69? Kuree's save cleaner for one? So when EPs are massively reduced (Seasons with 75% off was a nice surprise recently) I'm slowly going to add to my Steam collection and have a totally unnecessary back up. :o)

As an update. I did register the Steam games on my EA account (even though I didn't need to) and after a marathon downloading session I've got the majority of my store stuff installed in my Steam game and my Complete legacy is slowly continuing. A nice side effect of re-downloading all the store stuff, it reminded me to use some of it. I hadn't remembered that babies wave their arms and kick their blanket when in the swing. Hank Alvarado (nee Goddard) and I were watching the baby for ages. XD

Yeah I am pretty sure it forces 1.69. I know when we get our computers fixed I will be using the disks.

I do not envy you that reinstall. Downloading the store stuff was painful enough. Doing a full reinstall. >.<

Good luck.
