I've basically stopped having my Sims answer their phones at all because almost all the time, it turns out to be a whole lot of nothing- the Sim reacts negatively and hangs up, and instead of relationship points or an opportunity all I've gotten is wasted time. Is there a mod (or a retunable entry in the XMLs) to stop these spam calls, or at least reduce the frequency?

Sounds like real life to me. Sorry I can't help. Would like help for the same in real life too. Hopefully your sims aren't getting scammed for money as well.

Try the following. Retuner>>XML>>Gameplay.Socializing>>CallOver (and also AttractionNPCBehavior Controller)

Are these calls coming in on a landline house phone or their cellphones? I almost never see junk calls on cellphones and the vast majority of my sims do not have landlines anymore. Then again half the time I don't let them answer their cellphones anyway. If it's really important, they'll leave a message or call back (eventually). I know that's not helpful if one is waiting for the Opportunity of a Lifetime to come calling, but it's pretty rare that I care about those very much.

I see those all the time and my sim only has a cellphone which is probably why I never let him answer it.

If you have ITF, it broke most of the opportunity phone calls which should be those junk calls you recieve. There's a fix at MTS, after installing this mod the junk calls stopped for me and I'm getting opportunities again.

I do have ITF, and come to think of it one of my active Sims reached gardening level 10 a while ago without getting the omniplant opportunity, so I'll give that a try.
