Age of Immigrants

Post by sheridanhoughton » March 6th, 2019, 4:03 am

Is there a way to control the ages of the immigrants that arrive in town to man the consignment registers etc? My town seems to be filling up with sims to man registers, but they are all adults. I would like to have some young adults as well. The reason being that I prefer my female sims to have children while still young adults. This fits into the age spans I play. And my small town seems to get populated with all these adult sims that can no longer have children. So my gene pool is really small for the sims I play to find a spouse when they reach young adulthood.

Age of Immigrants

I think it might help if we could separate the issues a bit here. Resident sims, the ones who will breed and whom we are expecting to raise the next generation, are not immigrated in to staff consignment registers although I can understand why it might seem that way if that's what it ends up looking like.

SP governs resident immigration. If you have the SP Population module, it can also optionally govern the genetic makeup of NPC Service Sims and Roommates, but those are never world residents as they must be homeless (regarded as commuters, if you prefer). The YAs and Adults of the resident households that SP immigrates in are given standard careers, not role slots, depending on what is available for them to choose from in town. Teens and children are assigned to schools, teens may also pick up part time jobs.

Register controls Role Sims and to an extent Service Sims. Under Register's two "where do these sims come from" options, either new homeless sims are spawned to assign to unstaffed role giving objects like cash registers, LN bars, bouncer ropes, stylist stations, or existing unemployed residents already in your world are used if there are any available and unemployed. The former, the spawning of new homeless NPC sims, is what Register calls "immigration." But Register does not make residents out of the sims it creates itself, they are homeless NPCs, and not likely to be a part of the breeding pool for future generations unless you or some other force makes residents out of them.

If it's the age of the Role Sims like the cash register attendants specifically that's not meeting your needs, Register can also be used to assign specific sims of your choosing to these slots by using the role giving object's Register menu and the sims you select can be either homeless or residents. Resident Role Sims are kind of a special case and they do have somewhat of a chance for progression, depending on the shifts they work and how you have SP's options arranged, but usually when most of us think of Role Sims we do think of homeless or those who aren't really part of the breeding pool for future generations.

Does any of that help or am I attempting to solve the wrong problem here (wouldn't be the first time)?

I haven't been using the Register mod. I will download it and see how I go. At the moment, my game moves in sims to manage the registers, and puts them in a house. If I leave them alone, they even marry (and the male ones sometimes become fathers) and remain working the register until they become elders. But if I play them, they leave the register work and I get them another job. Because I only play small towns with limited population, I seldom get any other immigrants unless I put them in myself. I used to have my game tweaked for more immigration, but my towns grew too fast and I ran out of places to put houses.

From what you said, I will try and select one of the options you mentioned - either use homeless sims or unemployed residents. Not that I have that many residents to choose from. maybe homeless would be best. I will try both.

thanks

That's either EA's doing when Register is not in play or else SP is set to Manage the Homeless and is moving the Role Sims into houses for you. Probably the EA thing.

Role Sims can indeed be either homeless or residents, but they aren't meant to be playable.

What I usually do is insist on Register's "immigration" function that spawns homeless NPCs as needed. If there are some that I end up liking, usually a small number per world, I might later move them into proper residences myself either with others or in some kind of group living situation. In some cases I rotate sims in and out of these positions and regular jobs so they at least have a chance at a regular life in between covering the role slots. But anyway, it's great to have all that flexibility.

Be sure to report back on how this all works out. :)

thanks for your help.
I installed Register, and have tweaked it to use homeless people for the registers. Since I did this, the previous register operators that were living in my town have found jobs. I also edited them in CAS to age them down to YA, and now some of them are married and expecting babies. So hopefully now I will have a larger gene pool for my sims' children to eventually marry.

this will be much better, thanks
