The Dreaded Error 12...

Post by JohnL83 » February 23rd, 2019, 5:59 pm

I've been getting this a bit more often lately. I know how to fix it, by deleting the "bad" file, but I'm wondering why is it occurring more often now? On my old PC I only got it a couple of times over the course of a year and since my new PC I've had it happen several times now.

Thankfully I save often, so I don't lose too much, but today I lost an hour of real time, which in sim-land can be a lot, and this time included a wedding that went very well and likely wont be dupllicated.

Do you have Win 10 and are you using Game Mode? If you do try turning Game Mode off it really only works for games the are for Game For Windows Live. In the little bit of time I did have Win 10 when I had Game Mode enabled I had more Error 12's and random CTD's than I ever had in 5 yrs.

And before I forget do you have your graphics card recognized by the game and made sure the FPS is capped at your monitor's refresh rate?

Yes, I now have Win 10.
Okay, IDK if I'm using gaming mode for sure. I knew how to find all that on my old PC, but not on this one. Where do I find that setting?

Also I do think the graphics card is recognized by the game, the game is listed when I pull up the graphics thingy, in the NVIDIA window along with Cities Skylines. Is that correct?

Okay, found the game mode setting. It's on, turned it off. Nice that I can just search that stuff directly on my PC now. LOL. Hurray! I found something I like about Win 10!

No that just means that Nvidia has the game in it's archives so just to be sure go to your Documents>EA>The Sims 3 folder and look for the Device Config and copy paste the first 3 sections.

Do you use save cleaning? This can be done manually using s3pe or using SaveCleaner by Kuree. I'm not sure that's what helps me, but in the past I've come across this error very often, but now I know about mods and cleaning the game and this trouble does not bother me. In any case, you need to try everything. By the way, recently learned about a method that will help you return unsaved data if you had a game crash. The success is 50 to 50, in addition, don't forget to make a copy of your last save. I can't guarantee anything. The essence of the following: you will need a Save folder (of course, its copy, we don't want accidents) and a CurrentGame folder (if you closed the game forcibly or there was a crash, this folder will not be empty). In the Saves folder, delete all files associated with saving the town except Meta.data. From the CurrentGame folder, copy and move all files except the mentioned Meta.data. Unfortunately, I don't know what the CurrentGame folder looks like if you play with multiple towns using Traveler. Maybe someone will have comments on this matter.

In case this helps clarify at all, the contents of the CurrentGame folder only change when a Save (of any kind) has been completed, successfully or otherwise. The game actually runs from that which is loaded up in RAM, not from the contents of that folder. When we save, the elements of the game that have changed since the last time will be extracted from RAM into the CurrentGame folder, and only then copied back down to Saves.

I wouldn't recommend copying things out of a stuck CurrentGame folder once the game has crashed, unless we're in an all else is failing desperate to try anything kind of situation, and not without all of the warnings heeded about working off a copy of the game first that Sara_Darkees has mentioned.

World travel doesn't really change any of this. It shifts the actively being played world, so the actually loaded up into RAM nhd, from one world to another.

Okay, I'm a tad bit lost again. Copy and paste it where?

I did open this file to see what is there and I'm sorta confused. Under "rating info" it says Windows 8 6.2.9200
which isn't my current computer. My old PC was Win 8.1. Does this mean something?

Igazor, I didn't copy anything out of a stuck game folder, so I'm okay there. I read that I just go into the saves file and delete the file that as "bad" on the end. I end up just playing the last good saved file again and so far haven't had it be bad again right away.

Yes. I've used it on all my save files when they get over the recommend file size.
