Sarah_Sims, I don't have Origin, I have it from Steam. And yes it still says 5 CPU Memory: 1 It doesn't appear much has changed, below is what it says now. I will wait and see what Igazor says. Thank you very much though, it's likely it wont be much different, but just in case I will wait. I have to work tomorrow but will check back when I can.

JohnL83,

What does your DeviceConfig.log say now? Is it still showing the following near the top:-

If so, you may need to do the following tweak as well but wait to hear from igazor, first. He knows more than me. ;-)

Edit the GraphicsRules.sgr (usually found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin). Your installation path will probably be slightly different as I believe you have an Origin installation - igazor will know what this is if this step is indeed necessary.

Look for the following lines:-
  • seti gpumemLevelUber 4
  • seti gpumemLevelHigh 3
  • seti gpumemLevelMedium 2
  • seti gpumemLevelLow 1
Change them to:-
  • seti gpumemLevelUber 4
  • seti gpumemLevelHigh 4
  • seti gpumemLevelMedium 4
  • seti gpumemLevelLow 4
Save and close the GraphicsRules.sgr file.

Hope you get this sorted out soon! :-)
Missed a step you also need to change this in the GraphicsRules.sgr it's near the top so you should see it right away look for these 4 lines (all changes needed highlighted and Bolded)
setb textureMemorySizeOK true
if ($textureMemory == 0)
seti textureMemory 32
setb textureMemorySizeOK false

Change it to this
setb textureMemorySizeOK true
if ($textureMemory == 0)
seti textureMemory 1024
#
setb textureMemorySizeOK false
Make sure to add that hashtag and only change the memory size
Then save and close the GraphicsRules.sgr

Now open up the GraphicsCards.sgr
And look for this card
0x0fd1 "GeForce GT 650M"
Since I can see your card device ID you should change it to look like this
0x1c82 "GeForce GT 650M"

Now save and close the Graphics Card.sgr and delete the device config in your Documents>The Sims 3 folder so the game makes a new one.
And one final note don't let Steam update or verify the game files unless absolutely necessary and keep a back up copy of your changed GraphicsRules and GraphicsCards sgr's in case Steam does update or verify the files cause you'll need to replace those again with the changed copies.

The Dreaded Error 12...

Post by Sarah_Sims » February 26th, 2019, 4:23 am

sittingbear,
I didn't miss a step. On re-reading this thread this morning, I realised igazor hadn't actually gone through any of the changes with John yet, that you and I have outlined above. I imagine after igazor had advised John to limit his FPS first, then he would have moved onto these changes. I just jumped the gun a bit last night because it was late when I replied and I didn't read the whole thread through again. I just assumed igazor had already instructed John to make the standard changes you have advised. So, I would think it better if we left John in igazor's capable hands.

JohnL83,
I'm sorry if either sittingbear or myself has confused you with the instructions above. Please wait to see what igazor advises next, before proceeding with any changes to your files. :-)

The Dreaded Error 12...

(wakes up in a daze, haven't had coffee yet, it's far too early to be so confused...) :P

Yeah, I seem to have lost track of things here. We hadn't tackled the sgr file settings changes yet when I was last here, just the frame rate capping. sittingbear's instructions are the correct way to proceed with both the graphics card recognition and the texture memory override when we do get to them.

Also, let's read that line of the DeviceConfig properly if we could. What it is saying is
GPU: 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5)
GPU Memory: 1 (on a scale of 1 to 4)
CPU: 3
RAM: 4
etc.

It's just not spaced out very well. The reason that the GPU Memory is ranking so low is probably that the card is not yet recognized. Sometimes that fixes it, sometimes not. Let's take these things in proper order, if we could.

-- Make sure your Game Options are where you want them to be. Advanced Rendering in particular should be on (checkboxed) and most of your options can be set on the higher end with that card. The exceptions are Reflections/Mirrors and Water (use a medium setting) and High Detail Lots should be no higher than 2 to start. The most typical cause of grass and snow looking like colored (or white) blocks and having no texture is lack of Advanced Rendering, but if it's really something else we will get to that.

-- And what are we now getting for frame rates regardless of what the game looks like at the moment as the game plays and the game camera is moved around? As shown by the fps on cheats code, are things now locked at or under 60 fps, or whatever the refresh rate of your monitor is?

-- Then we proceed with the sgr edits, the one on GraphicsCards to get the game to "borrow" the profile of an older card it already knows about (sittingbear suggests using the Nividia GTX 650M, I would have gone for the 470, but the results should be pretty much the same) and the edit to the GraphicsRules file to get rid of the 32 MB texture memory override.

The files will not be where you were told they are as you have a Steam install. They will be under Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\TheSims3\Game\Bin. Make sure not to go under any of the EP subfolders along the way, there are sgr files in those as well but those do not need to be altered. The ones in the path above are for the base game, and those are the ones we are targeting.

-- And then we see what the results are by way of a fresh DeviceConfig if we could. Let's save those re-ranking rules on seti gpumemLevel for the end, they may not be required.

The Dreaded Error 12...

Post by JohnL83 » February 26th, 2019, 10:22 am

Okay Igazor, so I've set all my graphics to where I want them. With the exceptions of mirrors and Lots. The rest are anywhere from just high to medium. I didn't want to over do just yet, I can play with that later and most things already look tons better.
So grass looked okay again in the game I loaded (didn't open the winter game because it loads slower and I have to be off to work soon. But I did want to get things started and check my FPS. Which isn't good! I'm no longer in full screen mode and ran the game and I started out at 160 FPS then as I played it shot up and down between that and 200 FPS! What now? Should I do something else before trying your other things listed?

I will check back in when I get home, so no hurry or anything. But I do want to get this worked eventually so I can enjoy how great things look otherwise in The Sims. :-) In the meantime I've been loving getting back to playing CS.

To Sittingbear and Sarah_Sims: no worries guys I appreciate the help and while I am confused, that will be so even with Igazor's step by step instructions because this stuff just doesn't always register well with me. I get some things easily enough, but other things I'm lost. I've never had to mess with graphics cards or anything, so I tread lightly here. Above is what I've done so far. And I have downloaded the borderless windows thingy which also looks great. Basically I get the whole screen except for the task bar, which I like to see since I do like to look things up when playing sometimes, or pop over here to ask something before I forget. :-)

The Dreaded Error 12...

If you are playing in Windowed mode, whether that be the standard kind or through Windowed Borderless, then vertical sync as per the Nvidia Control Panel doesn't work. It's only for full screen and needs some help, this is where Nvidia Inspector comes in, and on this one we can explicitly set the Frame Rate Limiter to 60 (or again, whatever the refresh rate of your monitor is). Also as the illustration shows, Vertical Sync should be Force On; it probably already will be because of the Control Panel changes. The Frame Rate Limiter setting is above that one, at the beginning of the same section.

(second spoiler for an illustration)

Nvidia Inspector needs to be downloaded and installed, it doesn't come with the graphics card.

https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nv ... nload.html
(look for the Download links 2/3 of the way down the page, not in the upper right corner where there might be rogue adware if you do not have an Ad Blocker active)

This is much more important to sort out than the formal graphics card recognition thing and should really be taken care of first.

The Dreaded Error 12...

Post by JohnL83 » February 26th, 2019, 3:49 pm

Here are my monitor specs
HP 24uh LED Backlit Monitor
Desktop resolution 1920x1080
Active signal res 1920x1080
Refresh rate (Hz) 60 Hz
Bit depth 8-bit
Color format RGB
Color Space Standard dynamic range9 SDR

Ok, got Nvidia inspector downloaded and got Vertical sync to say force on and got refresh rate set at 59.7. My monitor says 60 FPS, but the only other option is 60.7 and I thought going down a touch would be better than up. If you think otherwise I can easily change that.
Next?
Oh yes and I do use AdBlocker. It's a must now days IMO.

That's fine, plus or minus 1, 2, or even 5 fps is not going to hurt anything. So what are you getting for frame rates in the game now?

BTW: I've noticed that in windowed mode if I change the screen resolution the window changes as well. Currently the game has me set to match my monitor's resolution, 1920x1080 and as for the sims and the map, everything looks wonderful, but my issue is with the messages and the control panel which are now are way too small for my comfort. I tried a few of the other settings and all it did was make the window smaller and smaller. sigh....:|
