Remove social influence requirement Uni careers

Post by Mirage » January 28th, 2019, 3:24 am

Hi all.
So I'd like to use the University careers for my Sims, but I really detest the social group requirements they need for it. I've searched the web for a mod that would remove this and I found one.* But unfortunately it doesn't seem to work in my game and I was wondering if there was anything I could do with nraas to resolve this issue. I am aware I could just give the influence points to the sims, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to.. thanks in advance :)

You can do that for yourself with s3pe and remove the social group influence although if the above mod isn't working for you, there's no guarantee your own would as it could be a possible mod conflict?
The files to edit are:
ArtAppraiserCareer_0x229d1d9ca5ee685d
GameDeveloperCareer_0x63cb41ae79518ae9
SportsAgentCareer_0xa7d255eebc25aec9

Given that the mod you've linked to edit these files, I cannot promise your edits would work any different. Have you just installed the mod or have you had it a while? Any others that might edit the above files?
I don't *think* there's anything the Careers mod does for these but as I don't use these careers much (and the social group element has never bothered me) I can't guarantee.

Thank you for your reply!
I have read it a few times, but I am not sure I understand. I take it from your comment that I could make my own mod with s3pe?
I'm afraid I have about zero modding skills. I'm not unwilling to learn though, and if there is a noob tutorial out there that could guide me through it, that would be great. I just think my question is a bit too specific to get any useful info on it.

The mod I mentioned in the OP - I re-downloaded it a few days ago. I have used it on both my laptop and computer but it doesn't seem to work. I remember years ago when Uni got released it did work, so it might be outdated :( Maybe the later EP's have done something to it so it doesn't work anymore?

Yes, you could :) Like I said, it will involve editing the exact same files as the mod you've linked to, so I cannot guarantee it's going to work. It doesn't appear a later patch has broken anything in those files which was why I wondered if you had another mod that edited the files I mentioned above.

Have you also tried contacting the creator of the mod and mentioned to them that it doesn't work?

If the above all fail, you can make your own version on the mod. There is a very good tutorial Here that will talk you through XML tuning modding step-by-step. By following that, look for the three file names I mentioned above. They've got the information you need.
If you get stuck, give me a shout and I'll help where I can. I do recommend mentioning to the creator of the mod that it doesn't appear to work though :)

The mod isn't outdated one of the later patches changed how those careers are handled. The mod does it's intended purpose requiring 0 Social Influence but you still would have to at least do something related to each of those Social Groups once to gain the base influence of 0 as by game default the base for all types of skills is -1. But it won't help much without also editing the Careers XML as they need certain levels of Social Influence related to that career to advance.
To get 0 influence:
Nerds play a video game or read a comic book.
Jocks go bowling or play with the soccer net.
Rebels go dumpster diving or do some street art.

Hey guys, I'm sorry for the delay.
I checked my sim whom I put in the Videogame Developer career again and he really needs a level 10 Nerd social skill to even be able to advance in his career, even with the aforementioned mod installed. I considered what you guys said about other mods - I do have many others. But the only ones that could somehow affect careers are those by nraas, and the JunJaymd Work From Home and Study Skills Online mod. Other than this little issue, I have never had any other weird glitches or bugs with these mods combined. I'll try to tackle the XMS files this weekend and ask the original mod creator for an update if that doesn't work. Thanks for the help :)

Ahh, the mod you linked to only prevents them requiring the social group influence to join the career - not to be promoted. You will need to edit the Careers XML to remove the need for social group influence to advance, as sittingbear quite rightly said.

Hi MissyHissy
I followed your tutorial and I made my first tuning mod working with the VideoGameDeveloper file (yay!). But like you and sittingbear said, it wouldn't work without also editing the careers file. I opened it, searched for the InfluenceNerd keyword and actually found many. But I am truly out of my depth with this one. Could you tell me which numbers or texts I should edit in order for this to work? Would this do the trick?

Of course! :)
In the Careers XML, you'll need to find the section relating to the GameDeveloper. In order to remove everything relating to the InfluenceNerd 'skill', you'll need to go through each level. This isn't at all as difficult as it sounds.

Firstly, find the first level. If you search for 'GameButtonTester' in Notepad, it should take you to the first level of the career. This section gives all the details for the level and includes the requirements for promotion. This is where you'll see the following:

<Metric2>SkillX</Metric2>
<Mappings2>5,8,10</Mappings2>
<Args2>InfluenceNerd</Args2>

The <Metric2></Metric2> field is telling you that this requirement is a Skill. The <Mappings2></Mappings2> shows the parameter (the first number being the Awful value, the middle being normal and the last being Outstanding) for requirement and finally, the <Args2></Args2> field denotes the actual skill. In this case, it's the Nerd influence. These three lines can be removed. Note: Once you've removed these lines, you'll see the following:

<Metric3>GameHoursPlayed</Metric3>
<Mappings3>-2,0,3</Mappings3>

This stays but the <Metric3></Metric3> and <Mappings3></Mappings3> needs to become <Metric2></Metric2> and <Mappings2></Mappings2>.

You repeat that method for all the remaining levels, both branches. Once that's done, save and pop the package file into your mods folder. That should remove all need for the Nerd influence from this career.

The process is exactly the same for the other two careers. You should remove those influences in the same package because if you don't, the packages would conflict with each other, as they edit the same file. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

I hope that helps. If none of what I just said made any sense, give a shout :D

They can actually just remove the skill requirement without changing anything else as the game will simply ignore the empty fields.
